Get to know Noise Pop 2010 Artist: Loquat
Whether it was from climbing loquat trees or throwing the sticky fruit at nuns, Loquat is a band formed on memories, and their music reflects just that. A five piece that includes a married couple, Loquat makes their mark in the bay area music scene.
Starting over ten years ago with front woman Kylee Swenson and former member Earl Otsuka began writing songs, but it wasn’t until 2001 that Loquat truly formed with the addition of a bassist, drummer, and keyboardist. With a few member changes and being named 2003’s Best Pop Group by SFWeekly, the group began crafting their sound for their first album, It’s Yours to Keep (Jackpine Social Club), which gained great public acclaim with aid of a tremendous amount of local radio play.
The latest album, 2008’s Secrets of the Sea (Talking House) best represents Kylee Swenson’s lyrics, each song using the most intricate imagery in her story telling. A particular track that stands out is “Go Hibernate” which was brought upon watching ‘March of the Penguins’ and is about Kylee Swenson and Anthony Gordon’s marriage. Loquat blends electro with timeless guitars and haunting melodies.
See Loquat share the stage with Memory Tapes, Birds & Batteries, and Letting Up Despite Great Faults as part of Noise Pop 2010 Saturday Feb 27th at Bottom of the Hill.
