Mako Sica Set to Release ‘Dual Horizon’ on February 16

Mako SicaChicago avant-psychedelia trio, Mako Sica, are about to release their first LP, Dual Horizon, on February 16, and what a long player it is.   The album consists of three tracks all recorded live sans over-dubbing in a hardware store.  The band gets their name from a potentially infamous signpost during a trip to the Painted Desert in Arizona.  Mako Sica, a Sioux Lakota Native American term, literally means “land bad,” and the group’s music accordingly conveys the feeling of traversing a remote, vast, desert landscape.

Continuing the theme, first single, “I’itoi,” is named after a mythological Native American god who was the overseer of the desert.  The track builds methodically, weaving a canvas of chiming guitars, hallowed chants, and tribal percussion.  Sifting in and out of powerful crescendos and ambient relief, the band’s sound is similar in style to Godspeed You! Black Emperor and early Pelican.  You can stream the entire album here.
