Artists Come Together to Remember Judee Sill
Judee Sill may not be a name known to many, but she is among the most interesting musicians that the 70’s had to offer. Sill was the first artist signed to David Geffen’s record label, Asylum Records along with Joni Mitchell. She was an accomplished pianist, organist and guitarist and toured with the likes of Graham Nash and David Crosby. Though her personal life was often filled with tragedy, Judee found some relief through her music. Sill only released two albums, the self-titled Judee Sill and Heart Food, before she went into hiding after her second record did not gain her the attention she desired. Then, in 1979 her untimely death came as the result of a drug overdose.
Artists from all over have been rediscovering Sill’s music and have come together to appear on a tribute album for the late songstress. The compilation titled Crayon Angel: A Tribute to the Music of Judie Sill (American Dust) will be out on September 22nd and includes such big name acts as Beth Orton, Ron Sexsmith, Final Fantasy, Princeton and Daniel Rossen from Grizzly Bear. Not only will the original songs be covered, but two new songs that Sill had only written on paper will be on there as well. Beth Orton performs the unreleased “Reach for the Sky” and Bill Callahan takes on “Like a Rainbow.” It’s always nice to see an artist who was lost before their time get another chance at life.
