Harvey Sid Fisher’s Holiday EP is …interesting. I’m actually not even sure what to say about it other than that. Its obvious they were going for creativity and just swung way too high. The background music is far past creative and is verging into completely irritating, and Fishers’s growly vocals sound like Oscar the Grouch attempting to record an album. I actually halfway expected Big Bird to chime in during a chorus.

After listening to all three songs, I was actually unsure what the purpose of this album was. So, I turned to what his PR people tell me: “Grab a glass of hot cider, gather around the fireplace with your loved ones, and let Harvey Sid’s soft carol fill your house with holiday spirit and keep you warm all winter long!”

I’m sorry. Unless I plan to scare the hell out of all of my loved ones under the age of 12 and make my friends wonder what kind of a person college morphed me into, I probably wouldn’t gather around and listen to these songs with anyone. The songs that he is covering have absolutely nothing to do with the holidays, and his croaky vocals make the songs ridiculous even when not affiliated with Christmas cheer.

I feel like Fisher, who describes himself as your basic actor-singer-model should probably go ahead and cross “singer” off of his list of abilities, because what he is doing is definitely not singing. It is simply the equivalent of what my drunken friends do when we hit up karaoke bars, complete with off-key notes, a gurgley voice, and random bursts of vocal energy. I honestly feel like a burp wouldn’t be too out of place.

If you are looking for something amazingly non-mainstream, I think this might be it. Although, not in a good way. But, then again, your take on this music will largely depend on your level of tolerance for his vocals. Maybe you will find something amazingly creative within these three tracks that I’m just not able to locate, but I really think that Dovecote just missed the mark with this one. It certainly will not attract new listeners, and has definitely driven me far away.
